Join us for a discussion of the book “Evicted” by Matthew Desmond. Happy Hour at 5:30 pm book discussion begins at 6:00 pm.
Knowledge is power and therefore the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg-North will be hosting a monthly Community Impact Book Club where participants will read a book about social issues that are plaguing communities across the country and are likely an issue right here in our own community. Participants will then engage in discussion to share what has been learned and improvise ideas on how we may be able to make a difference in our own community.
This month for our inaugural book club, we will be reading Evicted by Matthew Desmond.
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.
Each month the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg-North will discuss a new book regarding the social issues that plague communities across America, including our own. We will discuss what we have learned and action steps we can take in our own community to make a difference.
